Top Gun: Maverick has its driving creative force, Christopher McQuarrie, told the new episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that the storyline for Top Gun 3 “is already in the bag” and that the story came together quickly from the pitch from co-writer Ehren Kruger. “I already know what it is. It wasn’t hard,” he said, noting that by this time the structure is there.
It’s also not long since Tom Cruise mentioned talking about the future of the Top Gun bode well for future sequels. With the premise ready, the audience will be introduced to more high-level action and emotional storytelling that make this franchise.
Just days after Tom Cruise teased the future of the Top Gun franchise, Christopher McQuarrie, co-writer and producer of Top Gun: Maverick, gave confirmation on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that a winning outline for the sequel is already in place. McQuarrie described that the story for Top Gun 3 easily materialised, mainly thanks to co-writer Ehren Kruger’s pitch. Cruise previously stated on Australia’s “Today” show that there were a number of story ideas up for consideration, not just for Top Gun, but also for other projects, like Days of Thunder. The 62-year-old Cruise continues to be incredibly busy in and around Hollywood, working with McQuarrie, and he has just recently finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu.
Cruise starred in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), which was his first return to the role he originated in 1986, alongside new and returning cast members. Additionally, Cruise has maintained his desire to keep making movies into his 100s, and there are reports he is involved in a number of forthcoming projects with Ana de Armas, though whether their personal relationship is platonic or romantic is still unclear.
This development is exciting considering Tom Cruise had recently teased the future of the Top Gun franchise, and expressed excitement at the prospect of future sequels. With the story ready to go, it appears fans can look forward to even more intense flight sequences and emotional stakes from the creators of one of the most successful movies of all time.
